Health Benefits of Aromatherapy
The
properties of essential oils
have been well documented, tried & tested over thousands of years. Many people
are familiar with lavender &
tea tree. However there is an abundance
of other lesser-known oils which have been used to treat all manner of health
complaints & beauty needs.
All
of the oils are antiseptic, & tea tree is the strongest natural disinfectant
known to man, which is why we use it to combat infection in many different ways.
Many of the oils are also antibacterial & antifungal, but their properties
do not stop there. Some can help with irregular blood pressure, stomach disorders,
problem skin, anxiety, stress, G.U. problems, fungal & bacterial infections,
coughs, colds, wheezles, sneezles, burns, bites, stings & many, many other
things!
There
are a number of ways the oils work. They can either be applied topically to the
skin to deal with skin, joint or muscular problems, or they can be inhaled. When
inhaled they can treat many breathing problems or infections, but they can also
help maintain your mental health too. As the oils are inhaled, they trigger a
chemical process in your brain, much like emotions or thoughts trigger chemical
responses, which then send hormones/chemicals around your body. If a lot of negative
emotions & thought processes occur, it can result in poor health. It is very
well documented that anger compromises your immune system. Although very little
is known about the biochemistry of this science, millions of people have benefited
from balancing their emotions & enjoying a wonderful sense of well-being after
inhaling them or by being massaged with essential oils.
The
oils can be diluted so that it is safe to apply them to your body as a moisturiser,
or put in a burner,
diluted with water, to diffuse in a room (although I also use one outside in the
summer to repel insects).
They
can be used to add to water to create your own natural disinfectant & repel
pests; added to humidifiers to combat infections, sneezles & wheezles; dripped
onto your hoover bag to create a lovely smell in your house while you vacuum,
popped on your pillow to encourage sweeter slumber. The list of uses are endless
& there are lots of lovely books to give you inspiration. Here are a few of
my personal favourites that I am always dipping into:
